Getting to the Fraser Coast is a mainland problem first and an island problem second. Hervey Bay and Maryborough sit on the Bruce Highway and on regional air and coach maps. K’gari does not. There is no bridge. Queensland Parks spells out the island access options: barges, tours, flights, private boats. We will not reprint a timetable as if it were carved.
Drive from Brisbane (and the rest of the coast)
The default drive is the Bruce Highway north from Brisbane, then local roads into Maryborough or across to Hervey Bay. In clear traffic people talk about around three to three and a half hours to the bay; roadworks, holidays and wet weather add time you should actually budget. The highway is a freight road as much as a holiday road. Fatigue is the unfashionable risk.
From the Sunshine Coast you are closer; from Rockhampton you are coming the other way. Neither approach requires a 4WD until you decide to self-drive the island.
Parking in Hervey Bay is ordinary suburban parking plus harbour overflow in whale season. Maryborough is a grid. River Heads is a barge car park with a mood.
Fly
Hervey Bay Airport (HVB) is the regional door. It sits between the bay suburbs and Maryborough — useful if you are splitting time. Schedules change; airlines publish them. Car hire at HVB is how many fly-in visitors meet the esplanade. That hire car is usually not the car you take on K’gari. Island 4WD hire is a different contract, often with age excesses and beach clauses. Read it.
Connecting through Brisbane is the common national pattern. International visitors should assume a domestic hop rather than a wide-body into HVB.
Coach and rail
Long-distance coaches serve Maryborough and Hervey Bay on north–south Queensland routes. They are how you arrive without driving; they are not how you day-trip the island. Maryborough has the stronger rail story historically; check current Queensland Rail / passenger products the week you travel rather than a memory of the tilt train.
Local buses exist and are not a tourist loop. If you do not want to drive at all, a whale cruise plus walking the esplanade still works. A self-drive island day does not.
The island hop: two barge logics
River Heads, about a twenty-minute drive from Hervey Bay along Booral and River Heads Roads as Parks describes the approach, is the bay-side vehicle barge. Destinations are Kingfisher Bay and Wanggoolba Creek. Trip time is commonly described as 30–50 minutes. Bookings are required. There is no useful public bus to the ramp; taxis and private cars fill the gap.
Inskip Point, near Rainbow Beach, is the southern door to Hook Point. Parks describes a short crossing (about ten minutes) running through daylight hours, generally without bookings. It is the door Sunshine Coast and Cooloola visitors use. Erosion and track notices at the landing have appeared in park alerts — check before you queue a city SUV.
Walk-on passengers can use vehicle barges. Tours bundle the crossing. Flights from Hervey Bay to the island exist as a scenic and access product; they are not a substitute for a permit if you then drive.
Permits are not the barge ticket
A barge ticket is not a vehicle access permit. Buy the VAP before you drive on K’gari. Camping permits are a third piece if you sleep in a Parks campground. This site does not sell any of them.

Getting the week right matters more than shaving twenty minutes off a map app. Hervey Bay is the base that forgives a late flight. K’gari is the chapter that does not.
Confirm live disruption on the Parks alert list, the barge company, and Fraser Coast Regional Council roads. Then go. The highway will still be there when you come back saltier.
Driving tired is the unfashionable risk
The Bruce Highway is a freight road. Holiday traffic, roadworks, and cane-season movements exist. Share the driving. Stop in a real town. Maryborough is a better pause than a highway servo if you have the extra twenty minutes. Hervey Bay will still be there if you arrive an hour later and less stupid.
Hire cars, island bans, and the second vehicle
The car you collect at HVB is usually the mainland car. The car that goes onto 75 Mile Beach is usually a different contract with a different excess and a briefing. People who ignore that sentence meet a towing invoice and an argument with a desk. Read both contracts. The K’gari page is the permit sibling.
Coaches, families, and no-car holidays
A no-car Hervey Bay holiday is possible: esplanade accommodation, a whale cruise, walking, and a taxi to a museum. A no-car island self-drive is not. Tours exist for that gap. Do not invent a public-bus loop to River Heads that does not run.
When to arrive for a barge
River Heads wants you earlier than your optimism. Bookings have a clock. Inskip wants you inside daylight and patient with a queue. Parks and the barge company own both sentences. We will not freeze a departure board in this repo.
